When they say that "beauty is pain," they apparently mean that literally. Curious? Read on to know what microneedling is and what it can do for your skin...
What is Microneedling
Microneedling or collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled injuries on the skin. These injuries trigger the body's natural healing response, which leads to new collagen production and a reduction in wrinkles, scars, and other blemishes. Microneedling can be used in any area of the body, including the face, neck, chest and hands.
Benefits of Microneedling
- Acne scars
- Dark spots
- Lines and wrinkles
- Reduce pore size
- Scars
- Stretch marks
- Cellulite
- Hair Loss
- Beard growth
Who Can Do the Treatment
Microneedling can be done in a clinic by a dermatologist or aesthetician (Check this article on how to find the right dermatologist). However, there is also an in-home microneedling device you can try at home.
Professional Microneedling VS In-home Microneedling
Microneedling involves prickling the skin with needles and may be best performed by a certified dermatologist or a professional aesthetician. You will feel more at ease knowing that the process will be safer, and they will be able to provide you with post-treatment care instructions.
However, if you can’t afford a visit to the dermatologist, there are a couple of derma rollers available online you can try using at home. Read on to find out how to use it.
How to Use a Microneedling Derma Roller
Step 1: Disinfect your derma roller
Step 2: Wash your face or the area you want to use the derma roller on
Note: Use numbing cream if you are sensitive to pain. The longer the needle size you use, the deeper it will go through the skin. Bleeding might happen.
Step 3: Start rolling on to the skin horizontally and vertically then crisscross one section at a time.
Step 4: Wash your face with only clean water and pat dry
Step 5: Wash your derma roller with soap and water then soak in alcohol for 3-5 minutes
Different Derma Roller Needle Size

NOTE: 2mm and 2.5mm are not recommended for at-home use. These are usually used by professionals since it pricks into the epidermis deeper.
Taking Care of Derma Roller
Clean with hot water after every use and shake to dry or submerge the derma roller head to a container of alcohol for 3-5 minutes to sterilize. Be sure to check for rust and immediately replace it even if the rust is only a small amount. It is recommended to replace your derma roller every 3-6 months.

Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is considered effective in improving the appearance of the skin. It helps diminish the appearance of dark spots, scarring, wrinkles, and scars. It is also used to help tighten and rejuvenate aging skin.
A 2018 study states that microneedling showed notable results in treating scars and wrinkles. However, keep in mind that microneedling is not a quick fix and it takes time to see results. It is always advisable to consult your doctor if this is the best treatment plan for you.
