How To Find the Right Hairdresser
#1 Research, Research, and Research!
There are a lot of fantastic hairdressers, you just need to do your research. A few ways to do that are by searching Instagram, Facebook, and Google. Search for hairdressers and your location and boom! You will see hundreds of business pages, individual accounts, and contact info. Look at their business page reviews and Instagram account to see what they offer, their experiences, and how they operate. Reviews from people will give you an idea of their professionalism and if they are trustworthy.
Another way to research is by through a word-of-mouth recommendation. Ask your friends, neighbors, or co-workers if they know someone who does an excellent job and spy on their business social pages before booking a schedule!
#2 Look at The Stylist’s Previous Works
When researching for the perfect hairdresser, you will stumble upon their social media pages. You can check their previous work and check the results. You will be able to get a feel if the hairstyle you wanted can be achievable.
Find a similar haircut or hair color you’re planning to get and look for social proof of their work. If the client was tagged in the photo and the profile is not public, you can even stalk their posts after getting their hair done to see how it looks from all angles. It would give you a “real-life" reflection of the haircut without being styled to perfection for a business page photo-op.
#3 Book a Consultation
Now that you have done your research and stalking, it is time to book a consultation. Get the hairdresser’s contact information on their socials or you can send a quick DM. Have the hairstylist look at your hair while it is dry. Wet hair will not give them an idea of how your hair falls naturally and how you normally style it. If they never check your hair or ask you questions and just wanted to start snipping and coloring? — RUN!
#4 Don’t Be Afraid To Speak Up
This probably will shoot your anxiety through the roof, but you must do it. Your hairdresser does not know what you want and your hair history, so you must speak up and give them an overview of your desired result (you can give them a PowerPoint presentation too if you like being extra).
Don’t be afraid to show those Pinterest pictures! Photos are a better depiction of what you want your hairstyle to be, and this will give your hairdresser a better feel of the hairstyle. Most unsatisfied haircuts are not from a bad hairdresser but from bad communication! Speak up and your hairdresser will hear what your heart desires.
Here are some things you can tell your hairdresser:
- Style you want (hair length, hair shape, face framing, color)
- Products you use on your hair (they might even give you haircare tips and hacks that works!)
- Allergies (if you are allergic to an ingredient, tell them! This is very important)
- Hairstyle recommendations
#5 Consider Your Hair Type
One thing to remember is that not because you saw it on someone, will it automatically look good on you. Some haircuts are simply better for some specific hair types. You and your hairstylist should also evaluate your hair’s texture to see if you will get a realistic result. Communication is the key to having a fantastic hairstyle.
Other Factors to Consider When Picking a Perfect Hairdresser For You:
- Location
- Budget
- Level of Experience/ Training
