4 Hair Types: Knowing What Kind You Have
The only way you're able to care for your hair well is if you know what type of hair you have. The 4 hair types are curly, wavy, coily and kinky. These are the four different physical characteristics of natural hair. Each one has its own features and textures which makes it unique.
Type 1: Straight Hair
This type of hair has an obvious form, which means it's smooth and flat on your head. It also doesn't have any bend or waves to it, which makes it more challenging to style than curly or wavy-haired people face.
Type 2: Wavy Hair
Wavy hair is a texture of hair characterized by gentle waves and curls with a slight bend or wave pattern. It falls between straight and curly, which are two other textured types of hair.
Medium wavy hair ranges from thick to thin, however, most people with wavy hair have medium sized strands that appear smaller than they really are because of the waves and curls. Wavy hair is commonly considered a softer version of curly hair.
Type 3: Curly Hair
Usually defined by ringlets that form when wet or dry. It is most common among people of African descent but can also occur naturally among Caucasians and Latin Americans with naturally dry scalps. Curls occur naturally as a person age from infancy into childhood and on some people continue into adulthood.
Type 4: Coily Hair
Coily hair usually has a tightly coiled pattern and tends to look like springs with a tendency to curl up. It tends to be hard to manage but can last for months without needing a touch-up or new style.
Best Hair Tips Based on Your Hair Type
Regardless of what type of hair you have, there are some tips anyone could benefit from. We're going to go over each hair type to determine the best hair tip for you.
1. Straight Hair
The best tip for straight hair is to use a deep conditioner 1-2 times a week, because most straight-haired people have hard to manage locks.
In order to maintain this type of hair, you should also avoid using hot tools too often and try to only shampoo your hair every other day. If you have oily hair, wash daily or use a dry shampoo.
Additional Tip: If you want more volume, ask your hairstylist to add more layers to your next haircut. And if you want to change things up by curling your hair, make sure you're using lightweight products that won't bring your hair down.
2. Wavy Hair
The best tip for wavy hair is to not wash it every day because it can cause the locks to lose their natural texture.
You'll also want to try and avoid using hot tools as much as possible, since they're known to damage your hair even more than shampooing too much.
Important tip: Get regular trims as type 2 is prone to split ends.
3. Curly Hair
Curly-haired people will love this tip because it can help you get rid of frizz.
To get rid of frizz, just apply coconut oil to your locks before you go to bed and then put your hair in a braid or ponytail. The combination of the oil and the braiding overnight will reduce the amount of frizz while giving you healthy locks.
Additional tip: Limit hair drying to once a week or less, diffusers can be fun for you! When styling, be sure to use a strong gel or hairspray.
4. Coiled Hair
Coiled hair tends to dry easily. With this hair type, your hair needs never-ending hydration. Use a deep conditioning mask treatment at least once a week and avoid heat styling as much as possible.
Additional Tip: Avoid frizz and hair friction by doing the Hair Plopping Method using a T-Shirt.
